Would you like to know what an IP protection class is and what it means for your smartphone? Here we have the most important details for you.
When reading through the technical specifications, one may come across a wide variety of familiar and unfamiliar terms. The latter probably also includes the “IP code” or the “IP protection class.” This is particularly interesting about smartphones because you can use them to check, among other things, how suitable your device is for outdoor use.
What do the IP protection classes mean?
The IP protection classes of an (electronic) object indicate the degree of protection with which housing is protected against external influences. These influences are, for example, contact, moisture, and foreign bodies such as dust or sand. The “IP” stands for “International Protection” and has nothing to do with the IP address of computers. The IP code is used for all kinds of electronic devices: from smartphones to garden lamps to vehicles. Incidentally, the term “IP protection class” is incorrect in that the protection classes refer to measures against electrical voltages on the device. The properties mentioned above are understood as protection classes.
A two-digit number identifies the IP protection classes. The first digit indicates how sensitive the device is to touch and foreign bodies. The second number relates to the protection of the device against water. In the following, you will find a table that explains the individual digits in more detail. The IP code is then put together from the two corresponding numbers representing a device’s touch and water sensitivity.
